KRMC Pharmacy Expansion

Enhancing Security, Safety, and Scalability for Critical Care Operations
Client: Kadlec Medical Center
Size: 2,330 SF
Delivery Method: Negotiated
Location: Richland, WA
TGB Architects led the design of this critical pharmacy expansion at Kadlec Regional Medical Center, partnering closely with pharmacy leadership and facilities staff to deliver a highly functional, secure, and USP-compliant environment. The renovation supports both immediate operational needs and long-term growth, enhancing the pharmacy’s role within Kadlec’s 24/7 care delivery system.

Project Goals & Design Objectives

This expansion was carefully planned to improve workflow, strengthen security, and support evolving infrastructure needs. Every element—from circulation to equipment support—was shaped by a deep understanding of pharmacy operations in a high-demand clinical setting.
Security & Controlled Access
  • Card readers and CCTV systems secure all entry points, narcotic storage areas, and adjacent corridors.
  • Access is managed and logged to ensure regulatory compliance and patient safety.
Environmental & Equipment Support
  • A dedicated 24/7 HVAC system ensures proper climate control for temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals.
  • Integrated temperature alarms and centralized monitoring tie into the hospital’s Building Management System.
  • Emergency power supports critical storage, ventilation, and lighting systems.
Storage & Workflow Optimization
  • Adjustable, heavy-duty steel shelving is designed for ergonomic access—eliminating the need for ladders or stools.
  • A six-foot-wide, double-door entry with keypad and push-plate operation facilitates large pallet deliveries and efficient staging.
Staff Wellness & Safety
  • Anti-fatigue flooring in high-use zones promotes staff comfort and reduces long-term injury risk.
  • Energy-efficient lighting ensures optimal visibility in all work and prep areas.
Functional & Durable Finishes
  • Chemical-resistant countertops and cleanable surfaces are used throughout medication handling areas.
  • Compounding spaces are equipped with compliant sinks, eyewash stations, and seamless flooring for easy sanitation.
Strategic Planning for Growth
  • The layout allows for future expansion with minimal disruption to adjacent hospital operations.
  • Pharmacy administration spaces are strategically placed for accessibility, confidentiality, and operational efficiency.

Designed for Today—and Ready for Tomorrow
This expansion enhances Kadlec’s capacity to safely manage medication storage and distribution in a secure, efficient, and future-ready environment. By aligning immediate operational improvements with scalable design strategies, the project reflects a long-term investment in high-quality, patient-centered care.
